WHO DO WE SERVE?
Anyone, who needs our help, between the ages of 16 and 21 years.
Second Base is the second largest youth shelter in the City of Toronto. We are located in Scarborough but house and serve youth from all of the City of Toronto, giving priority to youth in East Toronto and those located east of Victoria Park Avenue. Second Base is the only youth shelter between Victoria Park Avenue and the City of Oshawa. While our clients come from all over, many draw from the United Way “highest needs” neighbourhoods of Eglinton East- Kennedy Park, Dorset Park, Malvern, Kingston-Galloway and Steeles-L’Amoreux.

Second Base provides food, clothing, and shelter for homeless youth, aged 16-21, while offering them opportunities to become self-reliant within the community.
Second Base promotes a sense of belonging to a community that is supportive, challenging, non-judgmental, structured and empowering.
The Second Base Community fosters personal growth through the development of meaningful relationships and useful skills that encourage choice, self-confidence and independence.
In 1984, Human Services of Scarborough initiated a youth task force enquiry into the need for a youth shelter in Scarborough. Other studies revealed that during the school year, at any given time, 285 Scarborough high school students needed emergency shelter and were unable to access immediate services within the community.
In 1987, Second Base was incorporated as a community based non-profit organization. On December 8, 1993, our doors opened and by February 1, 1994, we were operating at full occupancy.
Today, in addition to the emergency shelter, Second Base operates a Housing, Information and Referral centre (Drop-in), and Onsite Public Learning Facility, that services both shelter residents and community youth.
