Second Base is the only youth shelter between Victoria Park Avenue and the City of Oshawa. Second Base promotes a sense of belonging to a community that is supportive, challenging, non-judgmental, structured and empowering. The Second Base Community fosters personal growth through the development of meaningful relationships and useful skills that encourage choice, self-confidence and independence. In 1984, Human Services of Scarborough initiated a youth task force enquiry into the need for a youth shelter in Scarborough. Other studies revealed that during the school year, at any given time, 285 Scarborough high school students needed emergency shelter and were unable to access immediate services within the community. In 1987, Second Base was incorporated as a community based non-profit organization. On December 8, 1993, our doors opened and by February 1, 1994, we were operating at full occupancy. Today, in addition to the emergency shelter, Second Base operates a Housing, Information and Referral centre (Drop-in), and Onsite Public Learning Facility, that services both shelter residents and community youth.
