HOW CAN YOU HELP
• Make a financial donation

CanadaHelps is a not-for-profit charity portal and a registered public foundation
(BN 896568417RR0001) that seeks to promote and facilitate philanthropy through online giving. We operate this website (www.canadahelps.org) that allows donors to make online credit card donations to the approximately 80,000 registered charities in Canada. It also allows charities to receive online credit card donations without the expense of setting up their own secure donations site.

WHY GET INVOLVED
You will make a difference in the life of a youth at risk.

Every day, hundreds of kids from our immediate communities find themselves on the street and in need of a helping hand. Recent statistics indicates there are up to 10,000 homeless or at-risk youth in Toronto alone, and less than 600 youth shelter beds available to meet their needs.

Second Base Youth Shelter in Scarborough is the only agency located, in what is considered to be, one of the highest needs areas in the GTA. And everyday since 1992 we have been making a difference in the lives of our youth by providing them not only with the basic necessities of life but equipping them with the skills, networks and tools to transition from a life on the street to a community of opportunities.

We cannot do this work without your help and support. With the financial, in-kind and volunteer assistance we receive young lives are changed every day: despair shifts to hope and new beginnings.
Please share this moving experience. Why not start by coming in to meet us and taking a tour?

VOLUNTEERS
Second Base could not manage without its volunteers. They play a central role in virtually every aspect of the agency. For example:

The Board of Directors is composed of volunteers from the community, who give their time and leadership talents to set the agency’s strategic direction and govern its management to achieve the mission and mandate established.

Special committees created by the Board, such as the Development Committee, composed of individuals dedicated to fund development and the experts in marketing, who provide expertise and support for the agency’s outreach activities, are also critically important volunteer supporters.

Operational Support Volunteers, again from the community help in a wide variety of ways, ranging from office and administration support, food services preparation, donation solicitation, maintenance and upkeep and program delivery support – such as volunteer leadership in sporting, literacy, tutoring and arts and cultural leadership.

Every term Second Base also benefits from the rich gifts that the many students, who undertake their practical work experience placement at the agency, bring: nurses from York University, Child and Youth Worker trainees from Centennial and Ryerson to name just a few examples.
