 ASSISTANT COOK Pre-APPRENTISHIP PROGRAM:
Second Base (Scarborough) Youth Shelter, in partnership with the world-renowned George Brown College Culinary School, and funded by the Ontario government, offers youth the chance to begin training for a career in Culinary Arts through the Assistant Cook pre-apprentiship program.
It is the second major Pre-Apprentiship offering through Second Base following last year's successful Horticultural Trade Technician Pre-Apprentiship program.
Twenty-four successful candidates have been chosen and began the first portion of the program in March. During the first six weeks they participated in academic upgrading. That included access to workshops, resume preparation, learning assessments, job readiness training and upgrading of math and english skills.
Then came sixteen weeks of sector specific training on-site at George Brown's state-of-the-art Culinary School. The last eight weeks will be spent in a paid practical work placement at restaurants in the GTA.
These students have taken the first step toward a Cook Apprenticeship or a Culinary Management Program. Many of these students also will be the first in their families or the first in their peer group to go on to Post Secondary Education.
The program wraps up with a Graduation Tasting Event at George Brown College.
